Historical Curiosities
The Farnese Hercules is one of the most famous sculptures of antiquity, a majestic representation of the Greek hero known for his legendary twelve labors. The original work, a colossal marble statue, was sculpted in the 3rd century AD as a copy of a Greek bronze attributed to Lysippus, dating back to the 4th century BC.
The sculpture represents Hercules in a moment of rest, leaning on his club and holding the fruits of the garden of the Hesperides in his hand, a symbol of strength and perseverance. The original is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, but its iconography has influenced art and culture for centuries.
